Founded in 1960, CIFL is a professional association that brings together suppliers of laboratory products, services and instruments for research, monitoring and testing. With a focus on the French laboratory industry, CIFL defends the interests of its members and the laboratory profession as a whole.

The laboratory industry is still extremely fragmented. However, the three main business segments – Public Scientific and Technical Establishments, Pharmaceutical and Chemical – account for more than 50 percent of all laboratory business.
Certain segments of the industry are seeing sharp medium-term growth, such as the biotech sector, private monitoring labs and the environmental sector. Nevertheless, the main levers for growth in the laboratory industry are public research and the agri-food sector.

In France, the laboratory market counts more than 172,000 public- and private-sector researchers.
Their expectations are high, especially in terms of services, automation and the certification of instruments and products as part of best practices and product traceability programmes.

Position in Europe: As opposed to the broader EU market, the French market benefits from the key role played by the public sector (Public Scientific and technical Establishments, Industrial and Commercial Institutions) and less prevalent but nevertheless dynamic segments like the agri-food, cosmetics and monitoring-laboratory sectors.
France still lags behind its neighbours in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries.
France has carved out a leading position in terms of investment in research and development due notably to the significant contribution of public-sector research. However, private research spending and venture capital investments are still far behind what is seen in Germany or the United Kingdom, for instance.
